The chemical equation is :
`Mn O_4^(-) +Br^(-) rarr MnO_2 +BrO_3^(-)`
1. The skeleton equation with oxidation number of each atom is :
`overset(+7-2)(MnO_4^(-))+overset(-1)Br^(-) rarr overset(+4-2)(MnO_2)+overset(+5)BrO_3^(-)`

2. To balance increases and decrease in oxidation numbers, multiply `MnO_4^(-)` by 2.
`2MnO_4^(-)+Br^(-) rarr MnO_4^(-) rarr MnO_2+BrO_3^(-)` .
3. Balance all atoms other than H and O.
`2MnO_4^(-) +Br^(-) rarr 2MnO_2+BrO_3^(-)`
4. Since the reaction occurs in basic medium , add `PH^(-)` ions to right hand side.
`2MnO_4^(-) +Br^(-) rarr 2MnO_2+BrO_3^(-)+OH^(-)`
5. To add H atom , add `H_2O` molecules on the left hand side and equal number of `OH^-` ions on the right hand side.
`2MnO_4^(-) +Br^(-) +H_2Orarr 2MnO_2+BrO_3^(-)+OH^(-)+OH^(-)`
or , `2MnO_4^(-) +Br^(-) +H_2Orarr 2MnO_2+BrO_3^(-)+2OH^(-)`
