Who was the first patient to b e treated with gene therapy? Why was the given treatment recurrent in nature?

Ashanti desilva in 1990 (a 4 years girl) was treated for ADA deficiency in treatement of SCID.
Permanent cure can be done only if functional ADA gene is introduced in the cells of early developing embryo. In above case it was introduced into lymphocyte stem cells of patient alongwith helper virus. This is why , the treatment was recurrent in nature.
