In upstream processing , in proper nutrient medium , a strain of desired microorganism is growth in optimum conditions of pH , temperature and aeration etc.
However in dowstream processing it is done when sampling report telss about completion of biosynthetic step and presence of optimum product in the cells . Thus it is the technique of obtaining the products of microbial activity . For example for preparation of antibiotics biomass is collected and product is separated. Upstream process deals, with the start of microbial activity.
