Account for the following:
Sulphur has a greater tendency for catenation than oxygen.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Bond strength of S- S bond is higher than that of O - O bond. The values are 226 kJ/mol and 142 kJ/mol respectively. Therefore, sulphur has a greater tendency for catenation than oxygen. Oxygen on the other hand forms O=O due to smaller size of oxygen.
