Salient features of Molecules Orbital Theory (MOT)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) When atomic orbitals combine, linearly they form molecular orbital .
(ii) A.M.O is a region in space where probability of finding electrons is maximum in a molecule.
(iii) When two A.O.combine, two M.O.formed called as bonding molecular crbitals (BMO) & Anti bonding molecular orbitals (ABMO).
(iv) BMO has lower energy & ABMO has higher energy.
(v) M.O. are poly centric.
(vi) The shapes of the M.O. depend on the shapes of the combining A.O.
(vii) Only those A.O. having similar energy & propest symmetry can combine to form.M.O.
(viii) The BMO are represented as `sigma , pi` while ABMO are represented as `overset(**)sigma overset(**)pi` etc.
(ix) Each M.O. can accommodate a maximum of two electrons with opposite spin.
(x) the electrons are filled in the M.O. according to Aufbau principle, Hund.s rule & Pauli.s exclusion principle.
