Explain the magnetic properties of transition metals.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Most of transition metal ions are paramagnetic because they contain one or more unpaired electrons.
(ii) Larger the number of unpaired electrons, higher is the magnetic moment.
(iii) In `Fe, Co and Ni`, the paramagnetic behavior is highly pronounced. Hence they are ferromagnetic.
(iv) `Zn, Cd and Hg` have no unpaired electrons. Hence they are diamagnetic
