Why does nitrogen show catenation properties less than phosphorus ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The N-N bond is weaker than P-P bond because of small size of nitrogen and high interelectronic repulsions between non-bonding electron pairs. Thus, catenating property of nitrogen is weaker than phosphorus.
