Justify the placement of O, S, Se, Te an...

Justify the placement of O, S, Se, Te and Po in the same group of the periodic table in terms of electronic configuration, oxidation state and hydride formation.

Text Solution

(i) Electronic configuration : All elements of group-16 have electronic configuration [nobel gas] `ns_s2 np_4`. Hence, because of the similar electronic configuration these elements are present in the same group.
(ii) Oxidation states : The elements of group-16 shows oxidation states of (-2), (+2), (+4) and (+6). Oxygen, however shows (-2) oxidation state only due to absence of d-orbitals while Po shows (+2) and (+4) oxidation states.
(iii) Formation of Hydrides : The elements of group-16 forms hydride of type `H_2E`. Because of same general formula, they can be placed in the same group.
