If `x=asecthetacosvarphi,\ \ y=bsecthetasinvarphi` and `z=ctantheta` , show that `(x^2)/(a^2)+(y^2)/(b^2)-(z^2)/(c^2)=1`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We have
` (x)/(a) = sec theta cos phi " "...(i) and (y)/(b) = sec theta sin phi " "...(ii). `
Squaring (i) and (ii) and adding, we get
` ((x^(2))/(a^(2)) + (y^(2))/(b^(2))) = sec^(2) theta (cos^(2) phi + sin^(2) phi )`
` = sec^(2) theta " "[ because cos^(2) phi + sin^(2) phi = 1] `
` = (1+ tan^(2) theta ) = (1+ (z^(2))/(c^(2))) " " [ because tan theta = (z)/(c) ] `
Hence, `((x^(2))/(a^(2)) + (y^(2))/(b^(2)) ) = (1+ (z^(2))/(c^(2))). `
