Which one of two , ClO(2)^(-) or ClO(4)...

Which one of two , `ClO_(2)^(-) ` or `ClO_(4)^(-)` shows disproportionation reaction and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The oxidation state of Cl in `ClO_(2)^(-)` is +3. So, chlorine can get oxidised as well as reduced and can act as reductant and oxidant both.
The disproportionation reaction of `ClO_(2)^(-)` is
`overset(+1)(3ClO_(2)^(-)) to Cl^(-) +overset(+5)(ClO_(3)^(-))`
In `ClO_(4)^(-)`, Cl is in its highest oxidation state, so it can only be an oxidant .
