What is the significance of progesterone-estrogen combination as a contraceptive measure ?

Progestogene in combination with estrogen play an important role in contraceptive. They are also known as pills. They inhibit ovulation and implantation.
It can be used by females as injections or implants under the skin. Their mode of actions is similar to that of pills but their effective periods are much longer.
