(i) A metal atom in coordination compound posses two types of valences (linkages), namely
(a) Primary valences, (b) Secondary valences.
(ii) The primary valences are ionisable and are satisfied only by negative ions.
(iii) The secondary valences are non-ionisable and are satisfied either by neutral molecules or negative ions (called ligands)
