The ratio of kinetic energy to the total...

The ratio of kinetic energy to the total energy of an electron in a Bohr orbit of the hydrogen atom, is

A

`2:-1`

B

`1:1`

C

`1:1`

D

`1:-2`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Kinetic energy of an electron in a Bohr orbit of a hydrogen atom is given as
`KE_(n) = (Rhc)/(n^(2))`
Total energy of an electron in a Bohr orbit of a hydrogen atom is given as
`TE_(n) = (-Rhc)/(n^(2)`………..(ii)
Dividing Eq. (i) by Eq. (ii), we get
`(KE_(n))/(TE_(n))=((Rhc)/n^(2))/((RhC)/n^(2))rArr KE_(n):TE_(n)=1:-1`
