How is the chromosome number maintained in sexually reproducing organisms?

In sexually reproducing organisms, the gametes undergo meiosis and therefore, each gamete contains only half set of chromosomes. During gametogenesis the chromosome number is reduced to half by meiosis and during fertilization, the diploid number is restored in the zygote.
