Why is it that we can learn more about the shape of the earth by studying the motion of an artificial satellite than by studying the motion of the Moon?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

This is because an artificial satellite is closer to the Earth than Moon. Small variations is earth's gravity affect the satellite more than the moon.

Why the motion of a satellite around a planet cannot be taken as S.H.M ?

STATEMENT -1 : Weightlessness is observed in an artifical satellite and this weightlessness does not depend upon the height of satellite above Earth's surface. and STATEMENT -2 : Weightlessness is not observed upon moon because mass of moon is much larger than that of artificial satellite. The weight of a body upon moon is due to the gravitational pull of moon upon the body.

Calculate the ratio of the angular momentum of the earth about its axis due to its spinning motion to that about the sun due to its orbital motion. Radius of the earth =6400 km and radius of the orbit of the earth about the sun =1.5xx10^8km.

The earth revolves round the sun because the sun attracts the erth. The sun also attracts the moon and this force is about twice as large as the attraction of the earth on the mon. Why does the moon not revolve round the sun? Or does it?

Choose the correct alternative : (a) If the zero of the potential energy is at infinity, the total energy of an orbiting satellite is negative of its kinetic/potential energy. (b) The energy required to rocket an orbiting satellite out of Earth's gravitational influence is more/less than the energy required to project a sationary object at the same height (as the satellite) out of Earth's influence.

Is the motion of earth around sun oscillatory? Why?

Statement-1:A personfeels weightlessness in an artificial satellite of the earth . A person on thhe moon (natural satellite) feels his weight. Statement-2: Artifical satellite is a freely falling body and on the moon surface. The weight is mainly due to Moon-s gravitational attraction.

The weight of any person on the moon is about 1//6 times that on the earth. He can lift a mass of 15 kg on the earth. What will be the maximum mass, which can be lifted by the same force applied by the person on the moon?

If you compare the gravitational force on the earth due to the sun to that due to the moon, you would find that the sun's pull is greater than moon's pull. However , the tidal effect of the moon's pull is greater than the tidal effect of the sun. Why?
