When ethyl acetate was hydrolyzed in the...

When ethyl acetate was hydrolyzed in the presence of `0.1 M HCl`, the constant was found to be `5.40 xx 10^(-5) s^(-1)`. But when `0.1 M H_(2)SO_(4)` was used for hydrolyiss, the rate constant found to be `6.20 xx 10^(-5) s^(-1)`. form these we can say that

A

`H_(2)SO_(4)` is stronger acid than HCl

B

`H_(2)SO_(4)` is weaker acid than HCl

C

Both the acids have equal strength

D

The data is insufficient to compare the strengths of HCl and `H_(2)SO_(4)`

The correct Answer is:
A

Hydrolysis of ester is pseudo first order reaction.
`r=k[H^(+)]` [ester], `[H^(+)]`= constant
`r=k'` [ester]
So, rate constant, `k'=k[H^(+)]`
In the presence of `H_(2)SO_(4)`, k' value is bigger which implies `H_(2)SO_(4)` furnishes more concentration of `H^(+)` ions and `H_(2)SO_(4)` is stronger acid.
