In case of unsymmetrical ethers having two different alkyl groups, the alcohole and the alkyl halide formed depends on the nature of the alkyl group. If one of the alkyl group is tertiary, the alkyl halide is formed from the tertiary alkyl group.

This is due to the reason that the reaction occurs by `S_(N)1` mechanism and the formation of products is controlled by the stability of the carbocation.
