Oil floating on water looks cloured due to interference of light. What should be the approximate thickness of the film for such effects to be visible ?

A

100 nm

B

100 nm

C

1 mm

D

10 mm

The correct Answer is:
A

Whan we observe the colours of the thin film oil floating over the surface of water. The thickness of the film must be of the order of the wavelength of visible light. Therefore out of given options 1000 Å is the correct answer since range of wavelength of visible light is 4000 Å to 4900 Å.
