Use Hund.s rule to derive the electronic configuration of `Ce^(3+)` ion and calculate its magnetic moment on the basis of .spin only. formula.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Ce(Z=58) =[Xe]4f^(1) 5d^(1) 6t^(2)`
`Ce^(3+) = ""_(54)[Xe]4f^(1) 5d^(1) 6t^(2)`
`Ce^(3+) = ""_(54)[Xe] 4f^(1)` (only one unpaired electron), i.e. N=1
According to spin-only formula,
Magnetic moment of `Ce^(3+) (mu) = sqrt(n(n+2)) BM`
`= sqrt(1(1+2)) BM = sqrt(3) BM = 1.73 BM`
