Which compound in each of the following ...

Which compound in each of the following pairs will react faster in `S_(N)^(2)` reaction with `OH^(-)` and why?
(a) `CH_(3)Br or CH_(3)I`
(b) `(CH_(3))_(3)C Cl or CH_(3)Cl`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) `CH_(3)Br` and `CH_(3)I` both are primary halogen compounds. The reactivity will depend upon the size of the halogen atom. lodine is a better leaving group because of larger size, therefore, `CH_(3)I` will react faster than `CH_(3)Br`.
(b) Out of `(CH_(3))_(3)`,CCl and `CH_(3) Cl`, the molecule being a primary halide, i.e. `CH_(3)Cl`, will react faster with `OH^(-)` because in `S_(N)2` reaction, `1^(@)` halide reacts faster than `3^(@)` halide.
