Examine the given defective crystal :
`{:(X^(+),Y^(-),X^(+),Y^(-),X^(+)),(Y^(-),O,Y^(-),X^(+),Y^(-)),(X^(+),Y^(-),X^(+),O,X^(+)),(Y^(-),X^(+),Y^(-),X^(+),Y^(-)):}`
Answer the following questions.
Write the term used for this type of defect. Give an example of the compound which shows this type of defect.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The term used for this type of defect is Schottky defect. This defect arises when equal number of cations and anions are missing from their lattice sites such that electrical neutrality is maintained. These defects are vacancy defects shown by ionic solids in which the anion and cation are nearly of the same size.
Examples are NaCl are KCl show Schottky defect.
