What are succulents? How they are adapted to their environment ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Succulents or Drought Resistance. They are perennial plants of dry areas which store water. They are, therefore, fleshy or succulent. Succulence may be present in stems (e.g., Opuntia, Cacti), leaves (e.g., Aloe) or roots (e.g., Asparagus).
Adaptations.
1. Leaves reduced to spines.
2. Stems modified to fleshy structure.
3. The succulent stems are green to perform photosynthesis (such photosynthetic stems are called phylloclades).
4. Stomata remain closed during the daytime. They open during night.
5. Photosynthesis is different from that of other plants. It is called Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM).
