How do nature and properties of soil affect the organisms?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The nature and properties of soil depend on the climate, weathering process, its development as well as on soil composition, grain size and water holding capacity of the soils. These characteristics along with parameters such as pH, mineral composition and topography determine the vegetation in any area. The pH of the soil and water affect largely on the distribution of organisms. Some organisms require acidic conditions whereas other alkaline conditions. The availability of elements in soil determines the distribution of microbes and plants and animals. The soil deficient in nitrogen results in the production of insectivorous plants and nitrogen fixing bacteria etc. The salinity in the soil leads to the production of halophytes. The topographic conditions influence the distribution of organisms as well as other factor like wind, water current and light etc.
