Give two reasons for power loss in a transformer.

Two major losses and their causes for the loss of electric power in a transformer are :
1. Iron loss or Eddy current loss : The varying magetic flux producess eddy currents in the iron core of the transformer. This also leads to the wastage of energy in the form of heat. This wastage is minimised by using a laminated iron core.
2. Copper loss : Due to resistance of the windings of primary and secondary coils made of copper wire, some energy `(I^(2) RT)` is always wasted due to heating effect of the current. This is called copper loss. In high current, low voltage, this is minimised by using thick wires for windings.
