Write short note on Hoffmann's bromamide...

Write short note on Hoffmann's bromamide reaction. Why is it regarded as Hoffmann degradation reaction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hoffmann bromamide reaction. This reaction involves the heating of an amide with bromine and caustic alkali to yield an amine with one carbon less than the original amide.
`underset("Amide")(RCONH_(2))+Br_(2)+4KOHrarrunderset("Amine"(1^(@)))(R-NH_(2))+K_(2)CO_(3)+2KBr+2H_(2)O`
This is also known as Hoffimann bromamide degradations because the amine formed has one carbon atom less than the number of carbon atoms in the amide.
For example :
`underset("Propanamide")(C_(2)H_(5)CONH_(2))+Br_(2)+4KOHrarrunderset("Ethylamine")(C_(2)H_(5)NH_(2))+K_(2)CO_(3)+2KBr+2H_(2)O`
