Why benzylamine more basic than aniline?...

Why benzylamine more basic than aniline?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Basic character of amines is due to the availiblity of electrons pair on

In aniline, the lone pair of electrons on N-atom is involved in resonance with the benzene ring. The - R effect of benzene ring decreases the availability of electron pair on N-atom and hence basic character decreases.
In benzyl amine, the benzene ring is not directly bonded to the N-atom and hence `-R` effect of benzene ring cannot decrease the availability of electron pair on N-atom. Hence benzylamine is more basic than aniline.
