Zwitter ion. When a compound contains both acidic and basic groups, it leads to the formation of an internal salt. It involves the transfer of a proton `(H^(+))` from the acidic group to the basic group. For example, sulphenilic acid contains both acidic and basic groups which exists as a zwitter ion. During the formation of this internal salt the sulphonic acid group `(-SO_(3)H)` loses a proton, which is accepted by the basic amino group `(-NH_(2))`
