A beem of ultraviolet radius hacking wavelength between `100nm and 200nm` is inclined on a sample of atomic hydrogen gos Assuming that the atoms are in ground state which wavelength will have low intensity in the transnilled been? If the energy of a photon is equal to the ground state it haslarge probobility of being observed by on atom in the ground state

The energy of a photon corresponding to `lambda = 100 nm`is
`(1242eV nm)/(100nm) = 12.42eV`
and that corresponding to `lambda = 200nm is 6.21eV`
The energy needed to take the atom from the ground state to the first excited state is
`E_(2) - E_(1) = 13.6 eV- 3.4eV = 10.2 eV`
To the second excited state is
`E_(2) - E_(1) = 13.6 eV- 1.5eV = 12.1 eV`
To the third excited state is
`E_(2) - E_(1) = 13.6 eV- 0.85eV = 12.75eV`
Thus `10.2eV` photon and `12.1eV` photon have large probability of being absorbed from the given range `6.12eV to `12.42eV` THe corresponding wavelength are
`lambda_(1) = (1242eV nm)/(10.2eV) = 122 nm`
and `lambda_(2) = (1242eV nm)/(10.2eV) = 103 nm`
These wavelength will have low intensity in the tranmitted beam
