Why C Cl4 is resistant to hydrolysis , b...

Why `C Cl_4` is resistant to hydrolysis , but `SiCl_4` is readily hudrolgysed ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to presence of vacant d-orbitals in Si, `SiCl_(4)` accepts a lone pair of electrons donated by `H_(2)O` molecule and hence undergoes hydrolysis. Howover due to absence of d-orbitals in `C, "CC"l_(4)` cannot a accept a pair of electrons from water molecules and hence does not undergo hydrolysis.
