A moving particle of mass m makes a head-on perfectly inelastic collision with a particle of mas 2m which is initially at rest. Find the fractional loss in energy of the colliding partic le after collision.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`v_(1)=((m_(1)-m_(1))u_(1))/(m_(1)+m_(2))`
`=((m-2m)/(m+2m))u=-u/3`
Final kinetic energy of colliding particle `k_(f)=1/2m(u^(2))/(9)=(K_(i))/(9)`
`(K_(f))/(K_(i))=1/gimplies(K_(f)-K_(i))/(K_(i))=-8/9`
It losses `8/9` of its initial KE.
