The loss of water in the form of vapour from the aerial parts of the plant is known as transpiration. This is achieved by both, heat of the sun and the pressure difference between the roots and soil. Experiment: `*` Take two small pots having the same amount of soil. `*` One should have a plant in it. Place a stick of the same height as the plant in the other pot. `*` Cover the soil in both pots with a plastic sheet so that moisture cannot escape by evaporation. `*` Cover both sets with plastic sheets and place in bright sunlight for half an hour. `*` We could observe water droplets accumulated inside the plastic sheet of the pot in which the plant is placed. `*` This experiment shows that water has been lost through the stomata of the leaves of the plant whereas it cannot be seen in the other pot in which a stick is kept.
