Calculate the percentage decrease in the...

Calculate the percentage decrease in the weight of a body when it is taken 32 km below the surface of the Earth .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Data : d = 32 km, `R_(E) = 6400` km
The weight of a body at a depth d is
` 1 W_(d) = mg_(d) = mg(1-d/(R_(E))) = W (1-d/(R_(E)))`
Where W= mg is its weight on the surface of the Earth.
The decrease in the weight of the body,
`W - W_(d) = W d/(R_(E))`
The fractional decrease in the weight .
` (W-W_(d))/W = d/(R_(E)) = 32/6400 = 1/200 or 0.5%`
