Define Respiratory Quotient (RQ) and calculate the respiratory quotient of carbohydrate.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

1. Respiratory quotient: The ratio of volume of `CO_(2)` evolved to the volume of `O_(2)` consumed during respiration is called respiratory quotient (RQ).
2. Respiratory quotient of carbohydrate: When carbohy- drate for example glucose `(C_(6)H_(12)O_(6))` is used as respiratory substrate the RQ is 1.
For example : `C_(6)H_(12)O_(6)+6O_(2) to 6CO_(2)+6H_(2)O+` Energy
`RQ=(6O_(2))/(6CO_(2))=1`
This is because the volume of `CO_(2)` evolved is equal to the volume of `O_(2)` consumed.
