State and explain Kohlrausch's law of indendent migration of ions.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Kohlracsch's law of independent migration of ions: The limiting molar conductivity of an electrolytes can be represented as the sum of the individual contributions of the anion and the coation of the electrolytes.
`lamda_(m(AB))^(0)=lamda_(A^(+))^(0)+lamda_(B^(-))^(0)`
`lamda_(m)^(0)=` Limiting molar conductivity
`lamda_(A^(+))^(0)=` Limiting molar coductivity of cation
`lamda_(b^(-))^(0)=` Limiting molar conductivity of anion
Aplications :
1) Kohlrausch's law is used in the calculation of the linmiting molar conductivity of weak electrolytes.
Eg: `lamda_(CH_(3)COOH)=lamda _(CH_(3)COONa)+lamda_(HCl)-lamda_(NaCl)`
`=lamda_(CH_(3)COO^(-))+lamda_(Na^(+))+lamda_(H^(+))+lamda_(Cl^(-))-lamda_(Na^(+))-lamda_(Cl^(-))`
`=lamda _(CH_(3)COO^(-))+lamda_(H^(+))`
2) This law is used in the calculation of degree of dissociation of a weak electrolyte.
3) This law is used in the calculation of sparingly soluble salts like AgCl, `BaSO_(4)` etc.
