An oxide of iron is found to contain 69....

An oxide of iron is found to contain 69.9% iron and 30.1% dioxygen `(O_(2))` by mass. Calculate its empirical formula.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Fe=69.9% and `O_(2)=30.1%` Now, the ratio of the number of atoms of Fe and O in the compound
`Fe:O=(69.9)/(55.85):(30.1)/(16)=1.25:1.88=1:1.5=2:3`
`therefore` Its empirical formula is `Fe_(2)O_(3)`.
