A compound, on analysis shows C=40%, H=6.67% and O=53.33%. Determine the empirical formula of the compound. If molar mass of the compound is 30g `mol^(-1)` what is its molecular formula?

`C:H:O=(40)/(12):(6.67)/(1):(53.33)/(16)=3.33:6.67:3.33=1:2:1`
Empirical formula`: CH_(2)O`, molecular formula `: CH_(2)O`
Molecular mass`=n(12+2xx1+16)=30n`
As, 30n=30 `therefore` n=1. so, molecular formula`: CH_(2)O`
