The Al atom in `AlCl_(3)`, has only 6 electrons in its valence shell. It needs two more electrons to complete its octet. It, therefore, acts as a Lewis and catalyst in Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation reaction of benzene and other aromatic compounds . In these reaction , it helps to generate the electrophile (`R^(+)` from `R-Cl` or `RCO^(+)` from `RCOCl` or `(RCO)_(2)O)` which then then attacks the benzee/aromatic ring.
