Frequently Asked Questions

No. English is treated as two separate subjects (Paper 1 and Paper 2). A student must achieve the minimum passing criteria (generally 33% to 35% in aggregate) in both English Language and English Literature independently to be declared passed in English.

The most heavily weighted question is Question 1: Composition, which carries 20 marks out of the 80-mark paper. This question is critical for the overall score and assesses the student's mastery of structural flow, vocabulary, and grammar accuracy.

The Grammar section is highly scoring and rule-based. Preparation should involve rigorously practising exercises on Synthesis and Transformation of Sentences, memorizing the correct usage of Prepositions, and thoroughly revising rules governing Tenses and Voice/Narration conversions.

The core focus of the 20-mark Internal Assessment is on practical communication skills. For Language, it emphasizes Listening and Speaking skills (ASL) like discussions and oral presentations. For Literature, it involves Project Work that requires critical appreciation and detailed literary analysis.

Literature answers must be detailed, descriptive, and text-specific. Students should reference the text, analyze characters and themes, and use appropriate literary terms. Avoid generic summaries; focus on demonstrating critical appreciation of the text.
