Chapter 8 A Journey Through States of Water

CBSE Notes Class 6 Science Chapter 8 - A Journey Through States of Water

Water is one of the most important substances for life on Earth. It exists in three different forms—solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapour). This chapter explains how water changes from one state to another due to changes in temperature.

Students learn about processes such as melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation. For example, ice melts to form water when heated, and water turns into vapour when it evaporates. Similarly, water vapour condenses to form liquid water. This chapter helps students understand the properties of water and its role in the environment.

A Journey Through States of Water

2.0Key Features of CBSE Class 6 Science Notes Chapter 8 : A Journey Through States of Water

  • Competency-Based Assessment: Includes "Weather Detective" challenges where students predict weather phenomena (like fog or dew) based on temperature and humidity data.
  • Scientific Temper & Skill Building: Develops the skill of Systematic Observation, teaching students to track hidden processes like transpiration in plants and evaporation from soil.
  • Interactive Practical Activities: Highlights "Try it Yourself" activities, such as creating a "cloud in a jar" or measuring how the surface area of a container affects the speed of evaporation.
  • Foundation of Phase Changes: This chapter introduces the "Shape-Shifting" nature of matter. It builds a critical base for understanding how energy (heat) transitions water between solid, liquid, and gas.
  • Enhanced Visual Learning: Features clear diagrams of the Water Cycle and molecular models showing how water particles move differently in ice versus steam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water exists simultaneously in all the three states of matter i.e., solid, liquid and gas on this earth

Heating and cooling cause changes in state.

When the water vapour present in the air comes in contact with a cold surface, it forms water droplets. The process of conversion of water vapour into its liquid state is called condensation. Example – dew drops on plants.

It is the process of gas changing into liquid.

Water seeps through the surface of the earthen pot and evaporates, which imparts a cooling effect on the water.
