Introduction to Science

  • Defining Science:  Science is much more than a collection of facts; it is a dynamic way of thinking, observing, and doing. It is the tool we use to explore the world around us and uncover the hidden secrets of the universe by asking how things work.
  • The "Jigsaw Puzzle" Analogy:  Science is described as a giant, unending jigsaw puzzle. Every new discovery adds a piece to the puzzle, giving us a clearer picture of reality. However, because every bit of knowledge we find leads to even more questions, the puzzle is infinite—there is always something new to discover!

  • The Role of Curiosity:  Curiosity is the essential spark for all scientific exploration. It is the inner drive that encourages us to look at our surroundings and begin the act of  questioning. Without curiosity, we would never seek to solve mysteries or find solutions to the problems we face every day.



The Scientific Method: Step-by-Step Process

To find reliable answers, scientists use a systematic process called the scientific method. It consists of five core steps:

  1. Observation:  Noticing something interesting or something you do not understand.
  2. Questioning:  Wondering about your observation and forming a specific question.
  3. Hypothesizing:  Guessing a possible answer or explanation that can be tested.
  4. Experimenting:  Testing your guess through further observations or actual tests.
  5. Analysing:  Examining your results to see if they actually answer your question.

Defining Scientists: Scientists are simply people who follow the scientific method to solve problems, uncover the mysteries of the universe, or discover new things.

Science in Everyday Life

Nature as a Laboratory: Nature is a living laboratory where scientific principles are constantly in action. Based on the "Lake of Discovery," we can see science in:
  • Solar Energy:  The sun warming the Earth.
  • Reflection of Light:  Light bouncing off the smooth surface of a lake like a mirror.
  • Photosynthesis:  Trees releasing oxygen to keep our air clean.
  • Geological Changes:  The formation of massive mountains over millions of years.
  • Ecosystems:  Fish and plants living in harmony beneath the water.
Everyday Phenomena: Science provides the "why" behind daily occurrences:
  • Stars Shining:  Science explains that stars shine because of intense reactions happening inside them.
  • Flowers Blooming:  Plants are sensitive to light and temperature, which tells them exactly when it is time to bloom.
  • Dal Spilling from a Cooker:  This happens because some dals have a natural tendency to froth. If a pressure cooker is overfilled, there isn't enough space for this expansion, causing it to spill.
Science and Teamwork: Science is rarely a solo journey. It fosters collaboration because scientists often work in large teams to share ideas, combine their expertise, and tackle complex problems together for the benefit of everyone.


Important Life Cycles

Plant Life Cycle: A plant follows a specific path of growth. For a seed to grow, it requires water, sunlight, and nutrients  from the soil.  

Seed → Germination → Seedling → Plant → Seed

Silkworm Life Cycle (Metamorphosis)

Metamorphosis is the transformation of a larva into an adult through drastic physical changes. The new individuals that are born or hatched continue to grow until they reach adulthood.The four stages of the silkworm life cycle are:  

Egg → Larva (Caterpillar) → Pupa (Cocoon) → Adult

  • The Pupa Stage:  During this stage, the silkworm nets a weave to hold itself. It swings its head and spins a fibre made of protein. This protein strand becomes the silk fibre. Many caterpillars form a protective layer around the pupa called a  cocoon.


Essentials for Life: Food, Water, and Materials

Food and Nutrition: Food provides the energy needed for work, helps us grow, maintains our bodies, and protects us from diseases.
  • Components of Food:  The food we eat consists of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins,  water, minerals, and fibres.
  • Regional Cuisines:  Food habits vary by region. In Assam,  Cheva rice  is prepared using a special method: water is boiled in a big vessel called a  tao , and a  kadhai  containing soaked rice is placed on top of it. The dish is then covered with banana leaves to steam.
Properties of Water: Water is the most essential requirement for life.

  • Forms:  It exists as a solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapour/steam).
  • Freezing & Boiling:  Water freezes at  0°C  and boils at  100°C .
  • Weight:  More than half of our body weight is made of water.
  • Distribution:  More than three-fourths of Earth is covered in water. While found in rivers and lakes, most is in  oceans and seas . It also exists as groundwater and as snow on mountain tops.
Materials and Recycling: We use many materials daily, such as metal, plastic, rubber, and fabric. Understanding the  properties  of these materials (like whether they can be reused or how they react to heat) is necessary for sorting and recycling them properly.
