Top Preparation Tips for Odisha Class 10 Exams

The Odisha Secondary Education (BSE) Board has provided an important teaching opportunity to any students as they take the Class 10 board exams. The Board of Secondary Education (BSE) in Odisha has approximately 500,000 students sitting for exams annually, meaning students must have a systematic and intelligent approach to their preparations if they are to be successful. The following advice is based on both guidelines provided by the BSE Odisha and recommendations made by experts.

1.0Understand the Odisha Class 10 Exam Pattern

Before preparing for the BSE Odisha Class 10th examinations it is important to have a good understanding of the BSE Odisha Class 10th exam format. There will be two papers per subject - an objective and a subjective. The objective portion consists of 50 multiple-choice questions (50 equal marks) and the subjective portion of five (5) individual questions (also equal to 50 marks). The total time allowed will be 2.5 hours starting from 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM. The Physical Science paper has 25 multiple-choice questions and three subjective questions for both Physical and Life Science subjects. To be successful, therefore, a student must score the minimum of 33 points on each subject or he or she needs to have a combination of no less than 30 together with 33% across all subjects combined. Incorrectly answered MCQ's do not incur a negative point deduction.

2.0Create a Study Schedule

  • Download the official BSE Odisha Class 10 syllabus from bseodisha.ac.in and make a subject-wise checklist of all chapters.
  • Allocate dedicated daily study hours to each subject, giving extra time to subjects where you are weaker.
  • Set weekly targets — decide which chapters to complete each week and review progress at the end of it.
  • Reserve the final 2–3 weeks before exams exclusively for revision and mock test practice.
  • Stick consistently to the schedule — a moderate, regular routine is far more effective than last-minute cramming.

3.0Prioritising Topics while Preparing for Class 10 Odisha Exam

  • Review the BSE Odisha marking scheme and identify high-weightage topics in each subject.
  • In Mathematics, prioritise Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics — these consistently carry high marks in HSC papers.
  • Physical science has a large number of questions related to Motion, Light, Electricity, and Chemical Reactions, so you should concentrate on these topics as they are tested the most.
  • Life science has a high number of published articles related to Reproduction, Heredity, and the physiology of Human Beings. These will likely score well if you practice them.
  • Social science has high-scoring questions related to maps in geography and movements in history. If you practice adequately, you should score high marks from these types of questions.
  • For your First Language (Hindi/Odia), grammar and writing sections typically yield a standard number of points, so you should regularly practice these sections.
  • By, completing more difficult chapters earlier, you will have the ability to review these chapters as the exam date approaches.

4.0Mock Tests and Previous Papers for Odisha Class 10 Exams

  • Simulate real exam conditions: Attempt each previous year paper within exactly 2 hours 30 minutes — no notes, no interruptions.
  • Analyse performance: After each attempt, review which MCQs you got wrong and which subjective answers were incomplete.
  • Practice at least 5–7 years of BSE Odisha previous year HSC papers to understand recurring question patterns, important chapters, and the difficulty level.
  • Use BSE Odisha model papers to familiarise yourself with the current question format — 50 MCQs and 5 subjective questions per paper.
  • Track your scores across practice sessions to monitor progress and identify subjects that need more work.
  • Aim to attempt at least one full-length paper per subject every week, increasing frequency as exams approach.

5.0Revise Regularly

  • Maintain a separate revision notebook for each subject with key formulas, definitions, important events, diagrams, and short summaries.
  • Revise completed chapters at least once a week to keep them fresh in memory throughout the year.
  • In the final 2–3 weeks before exams, focus exclusively on revision — go through short notes, re-attempt weak areas, and practice MCQs.
  • For Mathematics, practise formulas and problem types daily. For Science, redraw labelled diagrams from memory.
  • For language subjects, revise grammar rules and practise essay and letter writing regularly.

6.0Maintain Physical & Mental Health

  • Get 7–8 hours of sleep every night. Sleep is critical for memory consolidation and focus.
  • Take short breaks of 10–15 minutes after every hour of study.
  • Eat nutritious meals and avoid excessive caffeine during the exam period.
  • Include light physical activity — a short walk or stretching — in your daily routine.
  • Stay calm. If stressed, speak to a teacher, parent, or trusted adult.
  • Avoid comparing your preparation with peers — focus on your own progress.
  • The night before each exam, do a light revision of your short notes and sleep early.

7.0Seek Guidance When Needed

  • Approach subject teachers whenever you are stuck — do not let doubts accumulate.
  • Form study groups with classmates to discuss difficult topics and quiz each other.
  • Refer to official BSE Odisha resources and model papers available at bseodisha.ac.in.
  • Use trusted reference books for supplementary practice beyond prescribed BSE Odisha textbooks.
  • If you need extra support, consult coaching classes or online resources for subjects you find challenging.

8.0Summary

  • Familiarize yourself with the BSE Odisha exam format (50 multiple choice questions, plus 5 long-form questions, each worth 100 marks), as well as how long you have to complete each subject (approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes).
  • Make a plan to complete your classwork prior to beginning your revision.
  • Develop a study schedule that allows for completing your higher-value lessons first and working on your more challenging areas early in your schedule.
  • Complete past 5 - 6 years of HSC exam questions and BSE-Odisha model exam questions using the time restrictions imposed by BSE-Odisha.
  • Make short notes for quick revision.
  • Stay physically and mentally healthy while studying for the exam.
  • Reach out to your teachers for help and use the BSE-Odisha website and any relevant material that they provide.
