Frequently Asked Questions

Look at the last digit. If a number ends in 2, 3, 7, or 8, it is definitely not a perfect square. Additionally, check the zeros at the end; a perfect square must have an even number of trailing zeros.

Take the digits before the 5 and multiply that number by the next consecutive number. Write that result down and simply place 25 at the end of it. For example, to square 35, multiply 3 by 4 to get 12, then add 25 to get 1225.

A digital root is the single digit you get by repeatedly adding all the digits of a number. For perfect squares, this single digit will always be 1, 4, 7, or 9. If you get any other digit, the number is definitely not a perfect square.

Yes, these tricks are excellent for saving time and verifying your answers. However, if a question specifically asks for a "Long Division" or "Prime Factorization" method, you should show those steps to ensure you get full marks, using the shortcut only to check your work.
