2.0Key Concepts of Chapter 3 Exercise 3.1

  • Been there done that: Perfect square means a square number is the same as multiplying an integer by itself (n×n=n2).
  • Unit digits of squares: We only see unit digits of a perfect square that ends in 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 and 9.
  • Numbers that are not perfect squares: If a number ends with 2,3 7 or 8, then that number can never be a perfect square.
  • Zer0s in perfect squares: Every perfect square will have an ever number of zeros at the end.
  • Properties of odd/even perfect squares: The perfect square of an even integer is always even, and the perfect square of an odd integer is always odd.
  • Finding the last digit of a perfect square: To determine the last digit of a large perfect square, just look at the last digit of the original number! The last digit of the new number will be the same as the last digit of the original number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Look at the last digit. If it ends in 2, 3, 7, or 8, it is definitely not a perfect square. Also, check if it has an odd number of zeros at the end.

The square of any real number (except zero) is always positive. For example, (-5) x (-5) = 25.

Any number ending in 5 will always have a square that ends in 25 (the unit digit is always 5).

No. While perfect squares can end in 6 (like 16 or 36), many other numbers end in 6 that are not squares (like 26 or 46). The ending digit only helps you exclude numbers.
