Humification

1.0Humification Meaning :

Microorganisms play a crucial role in the decomposition of a significant portion of soil organic matter, breaking it down into inorganic minerals that plant roots can absorb as nutrients. This vital process is known as "mineralization," contributing to the recycling of nutrients, including nitrogen, in the soil.

Under varying decomposition conditions, some organic matter undergoes a different transformation known as "humification" rather than mineralization. Earlier beliefs suggested that humification led to the formation of resistant organic polymers, but recent research challenges this notion, revealing that microorganisms are indeed capable of digesting humus.

2.0Soil Humification :

Humification process in soil occurs naturally or can be induced artificially in compost production. The process involves a combination of saprotrophic fungi, bacteria, microbes, and soil-dwelling animals such as earthworms, nematodes, protozoa, and arthropods. Organic matter, including plant remains and those processed by animals, contains a diverse array of compounds such as sugars, starches, proteins, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins, and organic acids.

Decomposition in the soil initiates with the breakdown of sugars and starches from carbohydrates, facilitated by detritivores invading dead plant organs. Simple proteins, organic acids, starches, and sugars decompose rapidly, while more complex components like crude proteins, fats, waxes, and resins persist for longer periods.

Lignin, a primary precursor of humus, undergoes rapid transformation by white-rot fungi. Together with by-products of microbial and animal activity, these processes contribute to the formation of humus—a complex mixture of compounds and biological chemicals of plant, animal, or microbial origin. Humus serves numerous functions and benefits in soil, enhancing its fertility and structure.

Some experts consider earthworm humus, also known as vermicompost, to be an optimal organic manure due to its rich composition and positive effects on soil health. Understanding these intricate processes sheds light on the dynamic interactions within the soil ecosystem and the significance of microbial activity in nutrient cycling and organic matter transformation.
