In the modern age, one of the most remarkable names in the field of science has been Stephen Hawking. Known for his work in cosmology and theoretical physics, his life has been the story of intellectual brilliance and personal courage. His debilitating disease did not stop him. 1.0Who was Stephen Hawking, and why is he important?

Stephen Hawking’s story is one of brilliance and courage. Born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England, he displayed a sharp curiosity for science from a young age. Despite being diagnosed with ALS, a progressive condition that could have silenced his voice, he rose to international fame as a thinker who redefined how we view the universe.

He was diagnosed when he was only 21 years old. Doctors at the time told him that he only had a few years to live. Yet, he continued to live up to 76 years of age and even became a Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. His work has shaped cosmology for decades.

2.0Contributions of Stephen Hawking to Science

Stephen Hawking has done research on the origins of the heart, space-time, and black holes. Hawking Radiation is probably one of his most famous predictions. As per this theory, black holes emit radiation, which means that they can lose mass and energy.

He is also known for his work on the Big Bang Theory as well as singularities. He also toyed with the idea of the Multiverse, a hypothesis that suggests that our universe is one of the many universes out there.

The story of Stephen Hawking's education highlights his exceptional intellect. When he was at St Albans School, he excelled in mathematics. Later, he put his focus on physics and pursued Natural Sciences at Oxford University. Even though he was dealing with health issues, he was able to complete his undergraduate studies. Then, he did his PhD in cosmology from the prestigious Cambridge University, where his doctoral thesis was on ‘Properties of Expanding Universes’ in 1966. This thesis was the foundation for the research he did later in his life.
