Pollution is what happens when harmful substances taint our environment in one way or another. It can impact the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we live on. Most people relate pollution to littered streets or smog-filled skies. While it is a part of it, it is important to note that pollution can come in many forms. It is a global issue that not only impacts the ecosystems, but also our health and the quality of life. Every single part of our natural world feels the impact of this.
In this article, we will be breaking down the different environmental pollution types, along with what causes them and what can be done about them. So, let’s dive in!
Pollution is more than just the trash in our rivers and the smoke in our air. It comes in many forms, each with its own set of consequences. Together, they pose a serious threat to our health and our planet’s future.
Let’s take a look at the most common types of pollution (soil, light, air, water, noise pollution), causes of pollution, and the impact they have on us:
Air pollution laces the air we breathe with harmful gases, dust, and chemicals. It is actually one of the most dangerous types of pollution. These invisible enemies from massive power plants and city traffic contaminate our air.
If air pollution is not controlled, what we will have is a runaway greenhouse effect. In this scenario, Earth will become so hot that it will start mimicking the extreme conditions of Venus.
What were once crystal-clear rivers and oceans have now started to turn toxic, all thanks to water pollution. This is because of harmful substances like chemicals, oil, or sewage ending up in water bodies. Not only does it harm aquatic life, but it also spoils the water we drink.
The land we live on is full of organisms that support crops, help clean water, and regulate the climate. But the more plastic waste and toxic chemicals are pumped into our soil, the faster it is destroyed.
Noise pollution is quite common in modern cities. And it impacts us more than we think. Noise also affects birds, insects and marine animals. Scientists have noticed behavioural changes caused by constant sound interference.
The pollution and its types we have discussed are widely known. But there are some other forms which are not talked about as much, but are just as harmful:
Humans, as well as animals, have a natural cycle. But too much artificial light at night can mess with it. Light pollution disrupts our sleep patterns and affects nocturnal animals. Furthermore, it has also cost us our view of the stars.
When factories release hot water into water bodies, it changes their temperature. This can kill marine animals who are unable to adapt to this condition. Also, thermal pollution reduces the oxygen levels in the water, which can further disrupt the aquatic ecosystem.
This is perhaps the most dangerous form of pollution and can come from nuclear plants, accidents, or mining. The worst part is that it can last for decades and cause large-scale contamination, genetic mutations, and cancer.
