Chapter 9 The Amazing world of solutes, solvents and solutions

CBSE Notes Class 8 Science Chapter 9 The Amazing World of Solutes, Solvents and Solutions

This chapter explores the chemistry of "disappearing" substances. A Solution is a homogeneous mixture where one substance (the Solute) is evenly distributed within another (the Solvent). Water is often called the "Universal Solvent" because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid.

The chapter dives into the concept of Solubility—the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve at a specific temperature. You will learn about Saturated Solutions, where the solvent can no longer hold any more solute, and how external factors like temperature and pressure can change these limits.

This knowledge is applied daily, from the sugar in your tea to the complex life-sustaining solutions found in human blood and the vast oceans.

2.0Key Features of Chapter 9: The Amazing World of Solutes, Solvents and Solutions

  • Solute and Solvent: This explains the parts of a solution and what they do.
  • Different kinds of solutions: This section talks about dilute, concentrated, and saturated solutions.
  • Solubility: Talks about things that affect solubility, like temperature.
  • Separation Methods: Talks about methods like crystallisation and evaporation.
  • Real-Life Applications: This has to do with drinks, medicines, and everyday mixtures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A solute is a substance that dissolves in a solvent to make a solution. It is usually a small amount. For example, sugar dissolves in water, which means that sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.

Because it is polar, water can dissolve more things than any other liquid. Its positive and negative sides pull in both positive and negative solute particles.

At that temperature, a saturated solution can hold the most solute it can; no more will dissolve. When the maximum is reached, the solute that hasn't dissolved stays at the bottom.

Most solid solutes dissolve better in liquid solvents when the temperature is higher. Sugar dissolves faster in hot water than in cold water.

A solution that is not very strong has a lot of solvent and very little solute. Light lemon water and concentrated lemon syrup are two examples.
