Chapter 4 Electricity: Magnetic and Heating Effects

CBSE Notes Class 8 Science Chapter 4 Electricity: Magnetic and Heating Effects

Electricity is widely used in our daily lives, not only for lighting but also for heating and generating magnetic effects. This chapter explains how electric current produces heat and magnetic fields.

Students learn about the heating effect of electric current, which is used in devices like electric heaters, irons, and bulbs. The chapter also explains the magnetic effect of current, where electric current produces a magnetic field around a conductor.

The concept of electromagnets is introduced, showing how electricity can be used to create temporary magnets. These are used in devices like electric bells and cranes. This CBSE Class 8 Science chapter helps students understand the practical applications of electricity and its importance in modern life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Resistance in wires stops the flow of electrons and turns electrical energy into heat energy. This is why light bulbs glow and toasters get hot when current flows through them.

When there is too much current (overload or short circuit), the fuse melts and breaks the circuit to stop fires. The wire inside has a low melting point so that it can quickly respond to safety issues.

A temporary magnet is made by wrapping insulated wire around an iron core and letting current flow through it. Unlike permanent magnets, it loses its magnetism when the current stops.

In 1820, Hans Christian Oersted used a compass near a wire that carried electricity to find it. Needle deflection showed that electricity makes magnetic fields.

For a stronger field, add more turns to the coil, increase the current strength, or use a soft iron core. The more turns there are, the stronger the magnetic field around the coil.
