Chapter 10 Light: Mirrors and Lenses

CBSE Notes Class 8 Science Chapter 10 Light: Mirrors and Lenses

Light is the medium through which we perceive the world, and its behavior changes when it hits different surfaces. This chapter focuses on Reflection and Refraction. Also study Spherical Mirrors: Concave mirrors (which converge light to a point and are used in torches) and Convex mirrors (which provide a wide field of view, used in vehicle side-mirrors). Furthermore, the chapter introduces Lenses, which work by bending light as it passes through.

By understanding the focal length and image formation, we can explain how the human eye works and how we have built tools like microscopes and telescopes to see the invisible and the distant. Students learn about types of mirrors and lenses and image formation. This CBSE Class 8 Science chapter builds a strong base in optics.

Frequently Asked Questions

When light passes through two clear materials and changes speed, it bends. This is called refraction. For example, a pencil looks bent when you put it in a glass of water.

A real image is one that can be projected onto a screen and is formed when light rays actually come together. For example, a cinema projector makes a real image on the screen.

A convex mirror gives you a wider field of view and makes virtual images that are smaller and stand up. It is safer to see more traffic behind you without turning your head.

A convex lens brings together parallel light rays at a focal point, also called the principal focus. Used in cameras and magnifying glasses to make pictures.

The point where parallel rays come together (lens/mirror) or look like they are going away from (convex mirror). Finds the focal length, which is important for optical devices.
