Chapter 8 Nature of Matter: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

CBSE Notes Class 8 Science Chapter 8 Nature of Matter: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

This chapter further explains the classification of matter and its properties. In contrast, a Mixture occurs when substances are physically blended without a chemical bond, such as air or salt-water, allowing them to be separated by physical methods like filtration or evaporation.

Understanding these distinctions is fundamental to chemistry, as it explains how the 118 known elements create the infinite variety of materials in our universe.

Students learn about physical and chemical properties, and how substances behave under different conditions. This chapter strengthens students’ understanding of matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

An element is a pure substance that contains only one type of atom, such as oxygen or iron. A compound, on the other hand, is made up of two or more elements that chemically combine in a fixed ratio, such as water or carbon dioxide. The properties of compounds are not the same as those of the elements that make them up.

A mixture is a physical combination of two or more substances in which each substance keeps its own properties. Examples include air and saltwater. Mixtures can be separated by physical means, unlike compounds, which have a set composition.

There are two kinds of mixtures: Homogeneous mixtures have the same composition all the way through (like sugar water or air). Heterogeneous mixtures have parts that are not the same and are easy to see, like sand and water or oil and water.

No, elements can't be broken down into simpler substances using chemicals because they are the simplest form of matter and only have one kind of atom.

Depending on the properties of the parts, physical methods like filtration, evaporation, distillation, magnetic separation, and chromatography can be used to separate mixtures.
